London – British megastar Adele spoke about her “year of anguish” that led her to live as a “recluse” in a rare interview published in Vogue ahead of the release of her new album 30.
“I thought I was just going to lock myself in a house,” she said of her anxiety-fueled retreat from dazzling audiences, which began with two canceled shows at Wembley Stadium in London in 2017 due to voice issues.
“That’s what I did. I was very lonely. It paid off. People are used to me being a recluse,” she said in comments posted Thursday night on the website. fashion magazine, her first big interview since 2016.
The 33-year-old singer is on the cover of his US and UK editions this month.
It was during what she called her next âyear of anxietyâ that her marriage to Simon Konecki, with whom she had a son Angelo in 2011, fell apart.
âNone of us did anything wrong,â she said.
“None of us got hurt or anything like that. Since then, I’ve been on my way to find my true happiness,” added Adele, who currently lives in Los Angeles and is dating US sports agent Rich Paul.
She revealed that a new song on the album was inspired by a comment her son made to her as the marriage fell apart.
She took comfort in “a lot of sound baths” – a meditative experience in which participants are “bathed” in sound waves – alongside more traditional meditations, exercises and “a lot of therapy”.
âI realized that when I was training I didn’t have any anxiety. ”
Adele added that therapy made her realize that much of her anxiety stemmed from her childhood and her relationship with her father Marc Evans, who left home at the age of two.
âMy relationship with men in general, my whole life, has always been, ‘You’re going to hurt me, so I’m going to hurt you first.’ It’s just toxic and keeps me from finding happiness, âshe said.
However, the couple “got our peace” before Evans died of cancer earlier this year.
The stress of the business and the death of her compatriot Amy Winehouse almost caused her to quit the industry altogether, she revealed, writing at one point to her manager: âIt’s not really for me. That’s not why I like music.
âI got really famous right after Amy Winehouse died,â she told Vogue. “And we saw her die before our eyes.”
The 15-time Oscar-winning, Grammy-winning soul star told fans to expect a slight change in sound with the new album, noting that there is “no ‘Hello. ‘bombastic,’ referring to her hit single from 2015.
Her words also changed course, she said.
âI realized I was the problem,â she added.
