Free exercise and meditation classes to give peel cancer patients a mid-year boost

People with cancer in Peel Region will soon be able to access free in-person or online exercise classes, with the announcement of the latest Cancer Council WA Life Now schedule.

The third term of the program will begin on July 26, with exercise and meditation classes offered.

Life Now aims to introduce exercise and meditation in a safe and supportive environment and to empower people to manage their own physical and mental well-being.

“Research has shown that exercise is effective medicine for people with cancer and that those who exercise regularly have fewer and less severe side effects from their treatments,” said Jessamie Skinner, coordinator of WA Life Now.

“These courses are offered to people in the community of Peel who are affected by cancer and their primary caregivers.

For John Griffith, a 70-year-old Peel cancer patient and recent Life Now exercise participant, the program has helped him feel better mentally and physically after his diagnosis.

“I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2020 when I was 68,” Mr Griffith said.

“The Life Now class exercise sessions have been incredibly helpful for my recovery and I now do regular workouts in the gym three times a week, as well as swimming.

“I am very grateful to the team at Cancer Council WA, whose professionalism and care have been such a motivating part of my recovery.”

Term 3 of the Life Now Exercise course will take place at 4 Life Physiotherapy on Rafferty Road from 2-3pm July 26-October 13.

The Life Now Meditation course will take place at Dot’s Place Peel on Victoria Circle from 1.30pm to 2.30pm from August 3 to September 7.

For those who wish to participate online, meditation classes will be held on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. from August 1 to September 5, as well as Thursdays at 9 a.m. from August 11 to September 15.
